Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

This beautiful bird is also an amazing flyer! With wings that beat up to 80 times per second, they can fly forward, backward, sideways, up, down, and even upside-down! They can also fly at over 60 mph. When trying to impress the female, the male hummingbird will climb high in the air, then dive toward the ground again. He must be careful, though: he’s going so fast, that if he doesn’t stop in time, he will hit the ground at 9 G’s (9 times the force of gravity!)

While there diet does consist mainly of nectar, they must also supplement with small insects. They’re so small, though (some measuring only two inches long), they can also be eaten themselves by some larger insects like tarantulas.
